Anita Pointer died
BEVERLY HILLS, CA Anita Pointer, one of four sibling singers who achieved pop and critical acclaim as The Pointer Sisters, died Saturday at the age of 74, according to her publicist.(Anita pointer illness)
According to publicist Roger Neal, the Grammy winner died while she was with family members. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
“While we are deeply saddened by Anita’s passing, we take comfort in knowing she is now at peace with her daughter Jada and sisters June and Bonnie. Jada Pointer, Anita Pointer’s only daughter, died in 2003.
Anita, Ruth, Bonnie, and June Pointer grew up singing in their father’s church in Oakland, California, as the daughters of a minister.
The group’s self-titled debut album from 1973 featured the breakout hit “Yes We Can Can.”

The singers, known for hit songs such as “I’m So Excited,” “Slow Hand,” “Neutron Dance,” and “Jump (For My Love),” received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
Break Out Album
The album “Break Out” went triple platinum and won two American Music Awards in 1983. Between 1973 and 1985, the group won three Grammy Awards and had 13 top 20 hit songs in the United States, according to Neal.
According to Neal, the Pointer Sisters were also the first African American group to perform on the Grand Ole Opry and the first contemporary act to perform at the San Francisco Opera House.
Bonnie Pointer left the group in 1977, signing a solo contract with Motown Records but finding only limited success. “We were devastated,” Anita Pointer said of her family’s 1990 departure. “I put on a show the night she left, but then we just stopped. We thought it wouldn’t work without Bonnie.”

The group continued to record in various lineups, including younger family members, until 1993.

Anita Pointer announced Bonnie Pointer’s death in 2020 due to cardiac arrest at the age of 69. “The Pointer Sisters would never have happened if Bonnie hadn’t been there,” she said in a statement.
