The push in Congress to codify gay and interracial marriage rights came after Associate Justice Clarence Thomas asked the Supreme Court to “reconsider” other rights established by the Court in the aftermath of its June ruling that Americans no longer have a right to abortion.
In a concurring opinion, Thomas singled out opinions that barred states from prohibiting contraception, sex by same-sex couples, and gay marriage.
Following the bill’s passage in the House, Biden cited “uncertainty” following the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe, and said the new law restores “a measure of security to millions of marriages and families.”
On Tuesday, between 2,000 and 3,000 lawmakers and advocates gathered on the South Lawn, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“It wasn’t just the right thing to do for America to pass the Respect for Marriage Act. It was personal to us, our employees, and our families. “It’s certainly personal to me,” Schumer added. “The tie I’m wearing serves as a reminder of why I’m here.
